Manipur is voting today in the second phase of Assembly elections in the state. The first phase of polling in the state took place on March 4. It recorded a huge voter turnout of 84 per cent in the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur. The crucial candidates contesting in the second phase are human rights activist-turned-politician Irom Chanu Sharmila and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh. On Tuesday, Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla appealed electorates to cast their votes in large numbers exercise their fundamental rights. The polling will be held in 22 constituencies of the state including districts Thoubal, Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong and Senapati. The Election Commission has set up 1151 polling stations for the purpose. Heptulla appealed to the voters to show “their constitutional responsibility” to make the north-eastern state “the first state in the country with the highest number of voter turnout.” The result of the elections will be announced on March 11.
