Police detained anti-methane project movement leader K Jayaraman, his wife and two of his supporters on Monday when they attempted to stage a protest against ONGC’s proposal to start an oil and natural gas exploration project in a village near Nannilam in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu. Police also detained more than 100 villagers for staging a protest demanding the release Jayaraman and others.

ONGC has been preparing to execute oil and natural gas exploratory wells in Thennanjaru village near Nannilam. However, police stopped all the four and detained them in the Eravanjeri police station.

Opposing the police action, more than a hundred residents gathered at the bus stand in Nannilam and blocked the road. They raised slogans demanding the release of Jayaraman and others immediately. The protest affected vehicular traffic.
