Tomato supply jumps manifold in a week

When vegetables reach the retail market, their prices usually double the wholesale rates. Due to transportation costs, market handling charges, middleman commission and retail margins, prices of vegetables often double or sometimes more than this by the time they reach the customers. Officials told ET that the supply of tomatoes at the Pimpalgaon Baswant market in Nashik, Maharashtra , has increased six-fold in the last week. The same trend is being seen in major markets like Bengaluru.

Prices in the wholesale market were in the range of Rs 37-45 per kg.

Narayangaon, Nashik, Bengaluru and the Himalayan foothills become crucial for the supply of tomatoes to the country during the monsoon season. From August to December, Nashik and its surrounding areas supply tomatoes to the country. On August 16, the average price of tomatoes in Pimpalgaon market was Rs 37 per kg, while the highest price was Rs 45 per kg. There has been a sharp decline in tomato prices in the last one week. A week ago, the price of tomatoes in Pimpalgaon market was between Rs 57 per kg and Rs 67 per kg.
